The word "elephant" comes from the ancient Greek ;lefas (general ?lefantos), probably from a non-Indo-European language, such as Phoenician.As in the Mycenaean Greek, Homer used the word to mean ivory, but after the time of Herodotus, it also refers to the animal. The word passed through Latin into other European languages.
