Statue Of Goddess Themis

She was the representative of divine justice in every human circumstance, and especially in everything connected with the laws of hospitality. Another property of Themis, inherited from her Mother Earth, was her prophetic ability. She had succeeded her mother in the Oracle at Delphi. She was the wise and sincere goddess responsible for the observance of rights in human relations. On a symbolic level it represents the law and the moral order, the divine law. The yoke on her left hand represented justice, and the chain and sword symbolized strict application of it.
