Statue Bull Head D

A fine example of Minoan stone carving and one of the most impressive works of the early neopalatial period is the bull-head-shaped rhyto. It is a ritual vessel, which was filled with the necessary liquid for the libation from a hole in the cervix and emptied by a second on the muzzle. Its form is identified with the main animal of the Minoan religion, the bull. His horns, not to be found, must have been Wooden and gilded, his eyes were inlaid with mountain crystal with painted Iris, the eyelids of Jasper, and the muzzle of Mother-of-Pearl. The bas-relief of the animal between the horns is rendered, while the hair on the other parts of the head is indicated by incised lines. Impressive is the way in which the stonemason has attributed the naturalness and strength of the bull, its anatomical proportions, the folds on its neck and its expressiveness. The vase is not preserved whole-it is only the left side of the head.
